55+ Creative Aging: Weaving on a Small Handloom

A beginners weaving class for folks 55 years young and older. During this in-person eight-week course, participants will be instructed in the art of weaving, both in historical and contemporary styles. Participants will become proficient with numerous tools and skills related to weaving, including the use of various kinds of looms. Throughout the process, participants will learn about the rich history of weaving in the United States, as well as a selection of weaving techniques from cultures around the world. One focus of this course will be demonstrating the social nature of weaving and how people around the world have used weaving as a communal activity and a source of comradery. By the end of the course, participants will have had the chance to make several pieces, including a wall hanging, a custom textile piece for a project of their choice, and a communal piece that will be displayed at the Ohio History Center after the conclusion of the class. All participants receive a full kit of items needed to take part in the class, and carry on their activities at home after the class is complete.

Advance registration required and there is a one-time supply cost of $40 per participant. A generous grant from the E. A. Michelson Philanthropies covers the other half of the $80 in supplies provided to participants.
