2020 Professional Development Bytes

When: Live on July 27, 2020 (session will be recorded)

The Ohio History Connection is organizing the Professional Development Bytes, a virtual version of our annual Ohio as America Professional Development Institute. We are still looking forward to next time we can host you at the Ohio History Center, but due to the current pandemic we decided to play safe and offer a virtual experience instead. We are looking forward to connect with you remotely and share some bytes of information to support your teaching practice. We hope to provide you with tools and ideas of how to better engage with your students remotely and how to approach meaningful and authentic content. To accomplish that, we have partner with experts from the Miami University and the Myaamia Center, and we have brought together our Ohio History Connection staff to create a unique professional development experience.

Registration is free. Sessions’ descriptions are below.

Session 1. 9:00-10:00 am

Empowering learning from far away

Presenter: Carla Mello (Ohio as America Manager at Ohio History Connection)

Remote teaching and learning can be a challenge but there are many ways we can empower leaning when in-person teaching is not a possibility. In this session, we’ll discuss best practices and tools to create an engaging, effective and fun virtual learning environment that will empower teachers and students through their journey. We will also reflect on some of the silver-linings (yes, they exist) of virtual instruction.

Session 2.  11:00-12:00 pm

Considerations for teaching about the Miami Tribe in the social studies classroom

Presenter: Kristina Fox (Education Office Assistant at the Myaamia Center at Miami University) and Dr. Stephanie Danker (Associate Professor of Art Education at Miami University)

Take a closer look at the new curriculum for teaching about Native American cultures indigenous to Ohio. We will break down the two lessons on Myaamia culture and imagery: Ribbonwork and provide tips for effective teaching.

Session 3. 1:30-2:30 pm

What Happens If I Push This Button? – Explore Ohio as America

Presenters: Trevor Rhodes (Content Coordinator at Ohio History Connection)

This is your chance to take a deeper look into our award-winning digital curriculum. If you have questions about managing assessments, grading, and additional features of our online curriculum, this is your chance to get information directly from our new content coordinator.

Session 4. 3:30-4:30 pm

Using Project-Based Learning to Develop Curious Students

Presenters: Samantha Rubino (State Coordinator for Ohio History Day)

Project-based learning can be a powerful tool to upgrade student inquiries to be more authentic and focused on taking action. Teachers will discover how PBL doesn’t just engage students in inquiry, but gives them the tools to identify and nurture their passions and unique interests. During the session’s accompanying activity, teachers will get a hands-on lesson to get them thinking and talking about PBL –as well as ways to incorporate PBL into their classroom.
