Why We Still Don't Know (For Sure) Who Built Serpent Mound

This event is no longer on sale.

Thursday October 15

7:00 PM  –  8:00 PM

Scientists have many ways to determine how old something is. You’ve probably heard of radiocarbon dating, for example. Each of these various methods, however, has limitations.

Ohio’s Serpent Mound is an enormous ancient American Indian sculpture of a snake. It is a National Historic Landmark and it’s on the United States’ Tentative List of sites to be considered for nomination to the United Nations’ World Heritage List. So it’s kind of embarrassing that after more than 150 years of archaeological investigations, we still don’t know for sure how old it is, or which of the ancient American Indian cultures who lived in this region built it.

In this presentation, Dr. Lepper will review the history of efforts to figure out the age of Serpent Mound, discuss why we still don’t know (for sure) the answer to this important question, and share who he thinks most likely built Serpent Mound. A short Q&A session will follow the presentation.
