The Ohio History Connection and the School & Teacher Support team invite you to our Annual Professional Development Institute. The goal of this workshop is to bring social studies educators together and provide them with the opportunity to learn and discuss new ideas and resources that can be implemented in their classroom in the coming school year and beyond.
Throughout this day, educators will participate in various sessions focused on teaching social studies content. This year, we are happy to have sessions tailored to social studies standards for elementary grade bands and middle/high school grade bands. To provide a unique and engaging program, we have collaborated with experts in research, archaeology and social studies content from the Ohio History Connection.

Learn about the Big and Little Darby Creek State and National Scenic River from ODNR’s Ohio Scenic Rivers Program staff. This central Ohio stream system is one of the state’s best and harbors an abundance of aquatic life including rare and endangered species. What makes it so special? Join us to hear more about the natural characteristics of the streams including their fascinating wildlife and why they’re thriving there, as well as the threats to water quality and habitats. Discover how ODNR’s Division of Natural Areas and Preserves are working to protect this wonderful stream system.
Session 2: August 23rd, 10 a.m.–noon Hands-on session at Battelle Darby Creek Metropark
Learn about the Big and Little Darby Creek State and National Scenic River from ODNR’s Ohio Scenic Rivers Program staff. Learn firsthand about Big Darby Creek and its excellent water quality and aquatic habitat. We’ll begin with a short walk to the river and learn how streamside forests influence aquatic habitat and stream health. Then wade into Big Darby Creek to use nets to collect macroinvertebrates (aquatic bugs like crayfish and insects). You’ll learn how to identify these tiny creatures and recognize their connection to water quality. Event will also explore volunteer opportunities with ODNR’s Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.
WHAT TO BRING / WEAR for session 2: Please wear close-toed shoes that can be worn into the water and clothes that can get wet. Bug spray, a hat and water are also recommended.
DIRECTIONS for session 2: The entrance to the Indian Ridge picnic area is located on Darby Creek Drive south of Alkire Road. See the sign at the entrance and turn in for the access drive. Proceed approximately one mile, down a hill, and park at the second parking area on the left. Google map pin to parking area: https://maps.app.goo.gl/T1yZpiF9aNhtVd7Q7
